ICNK Conference on COI Recommendations in Seoul

The International Coalition to Stop Crimes
Against Humanity [ICNK] will hold an international conference March 31st at the
Seoul Global Center to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between the UN field
office for North Korean human rights and human rights organizations both in and
outside of South Korea. The conference closely follows the passing of a
UN North Korean human rights resolution in November and seeks to examine
recommendations made by the body’s Commission of Inquiry [COI] to ensure their implementation–as well as lay out the next steps human rights groups can take as part of the campaign.

During this conference, the ICNK plans to urge countries that abstained during the vote on
the UN resolution to engage in the movement to improve North Korean human rights. Some of the main speakers at the event include Kim Young Hwan, senior
researcher at Network for North Korean Democracy and Human Rights (NKnet);
Daniel Awigra of the Human Rights Working Group [HRWG] ; David Hawk, author of
“The Hidden Gulag”; Benedict Rogers, East Asia team leader of Christian Solidarity
Worldwide.

ICNK is an international coalition of 40 global human rights groups–including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International,
and International Federation for Human Rights–from over 15 countries. ICNK has played an integral
role in rallying global support for the creation of the COI on North Korea. It
also helped provide testimonies from North Korean defectors and gather relevant
information, both indispensable in the drafting of the final COI report.

The event will take place from 9:30a.m.-1:00p.m. and is open to the public. More information is available here.
