NK Calls for Reform of UN Security Council

The opening of the 69th General Assembly meeting at the UN
Headquarters in New York has prompted Rodong Sinmun, the daily
propaganda publication of the Chosun Workers’ Party, to release a
report on September 17th calling for reform of the UN Security Council.

Citing international peace and security as motivations
behind the demand, the report declared, “The world should no longer be
dominated by the U.S. and the UN arena should no longer be controlled by
specific countries.”

It went on to state that the UN principles of “respect for
sovereignty, equal sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs” are
being “openly ignored and ‘resolutions’ that justify the U.S. policy for world
domination are rammed through the UN.” UN-imposed sanctions on North Korea were
cited as the main example of such “unwarranted ‘resolutions.’”

“If the U.S. is allowed to realize its ambition for world
domination by abusing the signboard of the UN, there will be no justice and
truth in the international relations and the world will become a planet where
jungle law prevails,” it concluded.

Meanwhile, during the UN General Assembly Meeting, a
separate high-level meeting will be held with various officials and
the Office of the High Commissioner for
Human Rights [OHCHR]. The meeting will focus on gaining international support
for a U.N. resolution on North Korea’s long record of human rights violations.

North Korea’s Foreign Minister, Ri Su Yong, is scheduled to attend the General Assembly Meeting, the highest
ranking official to do so  in 15 years, and though his
official agenda is not yet clear, he is expected to defend North Korea against accusations of its dismal human rights conditions.

This closely follows a recent human rights report
released by North Korea, which deemed the U.S. a “living hell” and the North as
the “world’s most advantageous human rights system.”
