A presidential advisory
body, the Presidential Committee for National Cohesion (PCNC) has revealed
plans to make available online a document that
confirms the registration of defectors resident in South Korea.
Defectors must submit the document when
beginning a new school, university, or job, submitting rental applications for
housing, and receiving various kinds of support. However, it was previously
only possible to obtain by personally visiting local government offices. This stands in contrast to other forms of civil documentation, which can be obtained online.
The idea of making the defector residency document
available online formed part of a campaign conducted during March and
April this year, in which proposals were solicited to eliminate legislation and
institutions that create problems and discomfort in society.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Unification plans
to make the document available online via the government documentation portal
site “Minwon24” by the
end of 2015.
