A South Korean official revealed late last week that Ri Gun, Director General of the American Affairs Bureau in the North Korean Foreign Ministry, appears to have admitted some years ago to North Korean culpability for the 1987 terror attack on KAL Flight 858.
In an unofficial meeting with journalists on October 1st, the official explained, ¡°Three or four years ago, I talked at an unofficial event with Ri Gun, Kim Kye Gwan (then Vice Foreign Minister) and other North Korean officials during a Six-Party Talks session.¡±
¡°At that time,¡± the official went on, ¡°Ri Gun said, ¡®We have not committed any terrorist acts since the KAL incident.¡¯¡±
Ri then became troubled, the official added, saying, ¡°While I was urging him to apologize for the KAL incident if removed from the list of terrorism-sponsoring countries, he remained quiet. He looked like he felt he had spoken out of turn.¡±
The official then concluded, ¡°Is this not indirectly admitting to the KAL incident?¡±
The incident occurred on November 29, 1987, when a Korean Air Boeing 707, KAL 858, which was on the Abu Dhabi to Bankgok section of its route from Baghdad in Iraq to Seoul¡¯s Gimpo Airport, was destroyed in midair by two North Korean agents, Kim Sung Il and Kim Hyun Hee, killing all 115 people on board.
North Korea has long denied accusations of responsibility for the event, insisting that the explosion was fabricated by South Korea.
